New Delhi: In a significant development, the Supreme Court today constituted a 5-Judge Constitution Bench to hear petitions related to the abrogation of special status in Jammu and Kashmir in the first week of October.
Cases regarding media restrictions in Jammu & Kashmir, however will be heard after 7 days, the court said.
While hearing pleas against the repeal of Article 370, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also allowed CPM leader Sitaram Yechury to meet party colleague Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami, who has been detained in the Valley.
Chief Justice of india Ranjan Gogoi tells the Centre that Yechury was a citizen who was allowed to go to any part of the country, warned him that is he “does anything else”, it would be construed as a violation of court order.
The court also said that the police can take appropriate action if Yechury indulges in political activity during his visit.
The government, meanwhile, is likely to announce a package for Jammu and Kashmir after a Cabinet meeting today, days before the bifurcation of J&K into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh takes effect from August 31.
