Abu Dhabi: Shreyas Iyer-led Delhi Capitals (DC) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 17 runs in the Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League 2020 at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium on Sunday.
Batting first, Delhi got off to a flying start, with openers Shikhar Dhawan and Marcus Stoinis taking the team to the 86-run opening stand. While Stoinis perished for 38 off 27 balls, Dhawan continued the run-flow and scored a crisp 78 off 50 balls. Dhawan marched on after his partner’s dismissal and brought up his 41st half-century in the IPL with a six. DC skipper Shreyas Iyer continued his cold form of run as he scored 21 off 20 balls. However, it was due to Shimron Hetmyer’s late flourish that Delhi Capitals went on to post 189/3 in 20 overs.
Chasing 189, Sunrisers Hyderabad lost David Warner for 2 off 3 balls as Kagiso Rabada cleaned him up with a peach of a delivery. Manish Pandey (21 off 14 balls) and Priyam Garg (17 off 12 balls) hung around for a bit and played some great strokes but the duo was dismissed by Stoinis. Even Jason Holder was dismissed for 11 off 15 balls by a clever Axar Patel. Young Abdul Samad (33 off 16 balls) partnered Kane Williamson (67 off 45 balls) perfectly to help SRH remain in the game while scoring some attractive strokes but failed to take them over the line. This is the second year in a row that the Orange Army has been knocked out by Delhi in the playoffs.
With this win, DC have sealed a spot in the playoffs, where they will be facing defending champions Mumbai Indians. This is the first time in the history of IPL that a Delhi-based franchise has qualified for the finals.
