Poultry Farming Shows the Way Forward to WSHGs during Pandemic

Apart from providing financial assistance, poultry had proved to be a self-sufficient farming method. It is an activity that is practiced by both male and female members of the rural household which brings a sense of equality in terms of financial gain achieved. Women SHGs are now the prime examples of livelihood advancement in poultry farming in the state.

Awarded as the best SHG in the district in Krushak Mela by the Agriculture Minister of the State is not a feat achieved in some days. It is the fruit of years of dedication, loyalty and hard work of the SHG members and their vision to eradicate poverty from their region. Mamata Paikray headed the Maa Bhairabi SHG from Nimapara Block of Puri District. With a strong team of 19 members and their success in vegetable cultivation, mushroom cultivation, Dal processing unit and Badi and Pampad making, now they are envisioning to expand their future of Livelihood in Poultry farming. “With the state backing up the group in logistics & finance, the members are more confident in growing the chicks and multiplying their profits” says Mamata. With 150 chicks provided to grow and multiply, the sales have been reliable for the group. The money is helping the family of the group members in many ways bringing prosperity and happiness.

The year 2020 had been a lean year for financial improvement due to COVID-19. During the first wave, many of the local breeds like Banaraj and Kalinga Brown which had a decent market in the state, had shortage of demand due to low consumption among consumers and lack of supply due to temporary transport termination. The poultry business had faced a blowback causing enormous distress for thousands of poor and marginal farmers. At present, the market is reviving from its losses bringing their consumers back. The demand has been increasing and our SHG will gain its momentum & steadily progress towards further success in their future. Some determined women like Mamata and her group are setting examples with their willingness to improve their livelihood and support their families through poultry as a major changemaker.
