Adding Wings to Aspirations: WSC Helps Odisha’s Youth Achieve Their Dream Career

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is on the move and the same is with its youth. Today, the young generation of talent has the added advantage of modern technological skills and global exposure thanks to the proactive initiatives of the Government of Odisha. The focus of the Government of Odisha under the leadership of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has been to skill the youth at par with global standards. To enhance the skill sets of the students of various technical educational institutions of the state, the Government of Odisha has established the World Skills Center that has become the hub of skill training in Odisha.

The objective of the World Skill Center has been to harmonize academics with practical exposure. The WSC has been organizing international exposure visits and international internship programs for the young talent at some of the world’s best training institutes. As part of this, a team of 24 students visited Singapore on a six months internship that included working experience at some of the best companies.

As part of their curriculum, the students got an on the hand experience of the advanced technology and demonstration of modern skills. They also got an opportunity to strengthen their communication skills in Singapore. The World Skills Center has an understanding with the ITE Education Services which facilitated the internship. The visit to Singapore was a life-changing experience for them. They got real-life work experience at different Singapore companies including RC Hotels, Okura Flexible Automation Systems, PSA Corporation and YTL PowerSeraya. The objective of the programme is to create opportunities for WSC students to gain valuable global exposure and perspectives, including learning of new skills, to enrich and enhance their learning experiences in becoming skilled professionals that are ready for working and living at a global level For Manas Kumar Das, a student of mechatronics, the internship at Sembcorp Marine in Singapore has been the game changer. He has been selected by Tata Steel. His real life experience in Singapore has added wings to his aspirations. He not only got the global skills required for his future job but also got a handsome stipend from the Government. This is not the only story of Manas. Like him, a number of students passed out of WSC have been working in overseas also.

Rupsa Bijayeeni Sahoo, belonging to Nayagarh District, was in two minds about her career. She took admission in the advanced skill programme in Beauty Wellness & Spa at World Skills Center. She is now placed with IHCL and is ready to embark on a prosperous career. Like her, Rekha Kumbhar, an orphan from Belpahar, Jharsuguda, learned the life lessons and skills required for a career as a beautician. She is now placed with one of India’s well known companies Meghavi Wellness Spa. She continues to inspire the new generation with Skilled in Odisha brand.

Established in 2021, the World Skills Center has been imparting modern training to students from the nook and corner of Odisha. The students are mostly from the hinterlands and belong to the economically weaker sections. Till date about 450 students have passed out of the institute who are now part of the proud Skilled in Odisha initiative.

With more than 40 laboratories and 10 classrooms, the World Skills Center offers six courses including mechanical and electrical services, refrigeration and air conditioning, hair fashion and design etc.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who has given thrust to investment in the youth for the growth of the society, has always inspired them to explore their full potential and encouraged them to make an all-out effort to become the best in the world and take the name of Odisha forward.
