New Delhi: A day after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) gave its verdict in favour of India and asked Pakistan to provide consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav, Islamabad has said that it will grant consular access to the Indian national as per the Pakistani laws, for which the modalities are being worked out.
In a statement last night, the Pakistan Foreign Ministry said, pursuant to the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Jadhav has been informed of his rights as per the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
“As a responsible state, Pakistan will grant consular access to Commander Kulbushan Jadhav according to Pakistani laws, for which modalities are being worked out,” it said.
The ICJ ruled on Wednesday that Pakistan had violated international law by denying access to Kulbhushan Jadhav.
Jadhav was arrested in Pakistan in March 2016 and sentenced to death by a military court a year later.
The UN court ruled that Pakistan had failed to inform Jadhav of his rights, and deprived the Indian government “of the right to communicate with and have access to [him], to visit him in detention and to arrange for his legal representation”.
Meanwhile, India has called upon Pakistan to release and repatriate its national Kulbhushan Jadhav following the ICJ judgment.
