New Delhi: In a significant development, Home Minister Amit Shah has introduced Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Lok Sabha today despite protests from Opposition which labelled the legislation “regressive”.
The bill was introduced with 293 Ayes and 82 Nos. The Lok Sabha saw a war of words between Home Minister Amit Shah and the Opposition, with Shah insisting that the bill was “not even 0.001% against the minorities of the country”.
Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said, “nothing but a targeted legislation over minority people of our country”, while the TMC called it “divisive and unconstitutional”.
Meanwhile , As many as 16 left-leaning organisations have called for a 12-hour Assam bandh on 10 December to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, reported News18.
The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has already called for an 11-hour North East bandh from 5 am on Tuesday on the same issue.
