Berhampur: The Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) has lined up several development projects to improve civic infrastructure in the Silk City.
The civic body has decided to develop roads, revive water bodies, upgrade slums, strengthen sports infrastructure and improve on areas such as sanitation and beautification within its jurisdiction.
Sharing the details of development plans, BeMC Commissioner Dr. Siddeshwar Baliram Bondar said that they are focusing on various sectors, such as beatification of city, slum upgradation, housing, sports development etc as part of the transformative initiative in Berhampur, the major business and trade hub in south Odisha.
Currently, the BeMC is constructing a silk weaver workshop and showroom at the cost of Rs 1.97 crore. It is expected to be completed by March this year.
Similarly, a modern hygienic fish market at the cost Rs 3 crore will come up in the city by March 31.
Besides, the civic body is also constructing a state-of-the art sports arena at Baikuntha Nagar and a solid waste management plant at Mohuda. Both the projects are expected to be completed by the end of this month.
Moreover, the BeMC has taken up 154 projects under JAGA Mission for transforming the slums into liveable habitat with all necessary civic infrastructure and services at par with the better off areas in the city.
Similarly, as many as 68 road projects, 25 drainage projects and 5 toilet projects will be taken up in different areas in the Silk City, a BeMC official said.
The focus is also on the development of water bodies in the city. For this, the civic body has taken up 10 major projects at the cost of Rs 390 lakh to improve condition of ponds and tanks in various areas.
As many as four smart crematoriums at the cost of Rs 100 lakh each will come up at Aska Road, Gosaninuagaon, Jaganath Vihar and Baikuntha Nagar.
Apart from it, four indoor double badminton courts and four volleyball courts will also be set up in the city.
Furthermore, the Berhampur Municipal Corporation will also give a mega facelift to Gandhi Park and Nehru Park and set up modern vegetable and non-vegetable market at Mardharajpur vending zone 1.
Besides, 14 projects will be taken up for road side beautification in the city.
