Mumbai: Veteran Bollywood actor Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri, better known as Jagdeep, died yesterday in Mumbai. He was 81. Remembered for his famous character of Soorma Bhopali from the film Sholay, Jagdeep has acted in more than 400 films. His last rites will be held today at 11.30 am in South Mumbai Cemetary. At a time when the Hindi film industry had legendary comedians like Johny Walker and Mehmood, Jagdeep made a special place for him in the industry with his niche style of acting.
Jagdeep started his career in the year 1951 with B R Chopra’s debut film Afsana and continued to act for various directors of his contemporary times. His role in Sholay made him popular as Soorma Bhopali. Some of his films include Laila Majnu, Munna, Kismet Ka Khel, Aar Paar, Andaz Apna Apna, Phool aur Kaante, Shahenshah, Swarg Narak , Aaina, Bidaai and Gora Aur Kala.
