Muslim Federation’s Jammu Youth Wing in collaboration with the district police, Police Drug De-Addiction Center Jammu, Psychiatric Hospital, Global Peace Organisation and Government Model Higher Secondary School Sanjawan organised the seminar — ‘Drug Epidemic and Prevention Measures’.

Apart from the police, civil administration officers, dignitaries of Bathandi Sanjawan, youth, civil society members, lawyers, doctors and students of Higher Secondary School Sanjawan participated in this seminar.

Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) East Jammu Zaheer Abbas Jafri, Assistant Controller Drug Headquarters Muhammad Iqbal Pillai, Medical Officer Police Drug De-Addiction Center Dr. Shahnaz Butt, Head of Government Mental Hospital Dr. Shabnam and High Court lawyer Advocate Altaf Hussain Janjua spoke at the event. Apart from them, Advocate Umar Noorani, Law Students Mubashir, Saqib Kuchlo, Naeem Chaudhary, etc., also expressed their views on the topic. The speakers concurred that the drug epidemic has become a social scourge for which parents, families and society need to make sincere efforts individually and collectively.

SDPO Zaheer Abbas Jafari advised the youth not to get influenced by the vices of western civilization and to follow the Ganga-Jamuna civilization of India and the right path given in our respective religions.

Highlighting the role of religious leaders in the eradication of drugs, he said, “When we follow our own religion, we can definitely stay away from such evils.”

Dr. Shahnaz Bhat, Medical Officer, talked in detail about the process of drug addiction and how to get out of it. “Anyone suffering from narcotics is considered a patient and treated accordingly, which is certainly difficult but not impossible. It is difficult to stop the supply of drugs, but we must keep ourselves away from this epidemic.

Dr. Shabnam said, “The parents have an important role in preventing the epidemic of drugs, in homes where the environment is not conducive, there is bitterness in the marital relationship of parents or parents, who cannot give adequate time to their children. The chances of getting addicted are high.”

Advocate Altaf Hussain Janjua highlighted the role of law enforcement agencies in drug control and the shortcomings found in it. He said that in all the challans (charge sheets) presented in the courts under the NDPS Enforcement Act, 1985, the conviction rate is very low. Due to the fact that many important technical flaws are left during the investigation, which benefits the accused.

Law students Mubasher, Saqib Kachlo and Naeem Chaudhary asked the youth to use their talents in sports and other creative and constructive activities, choose their friends wisely, have good thinking and a constructive mind. Leader of Muslim Federation Youth Wing, social worker and founder of RVJ Ehtishamul Haq performed the duties of organisation in the best manner while motion of thanks was presented by retired engineer Abdul Rasheed Fani.
