New Delhi: The official name for the disease caused by the new coronavirus is Covid-2019, said the World Health Organization (WHO).
WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the new name makes no reference to any of the people, places or animals associated with the coronavirus. The goal was to avoid stigma.
The word coronavirus refers to the group of viruses it belongs to, rather than the latest strain. Researchers have been calling for an official name to avoid confusion and stigmatisation of any group or country.
Meanwhile, the number of fatalities from Covid 2019 epidemic reached to 1,110 in China on Wednesday after hard-hit Hubei province reported 94 new deaths, according to reports.
