CWC Predicts Heavy Floods In Mahanadi Downstream Areas

Bhubaneswar: The Central Water Commission has warned of heavy floods in the downstream districts of river Mahanadi. As 46 sluice gates – 31 on the Hirakud side & 15 on the Burla side of Hirakud dam have been opened, the low laying areas in Cuttack, Puri and Jagatsinghpur districts are likely to experience floods. The dam has been releasing 25000 cumecs of flood water which is likely to reach Cuttack by early Sunday morning.

By 9 pm Saturday the reservoir level of Hirakud stood at 627.41 feet and was rising. While the average inflow to the dam was 8,76,982 Cusecs, the average outflow stood at 7,62,629 Cusecs.
