Cyclone Sitrang Slams Bangladesh, Several Persons Killed; IMD Issues Red Warning To Four North-Eastern States
New Delhi: Thousands of people have been affected and several killed after Cyclone Sitrang hit the coastal areas of Bangladesh last night. According to reports, more than seven persons have died after the Cyclone hit the densely populated areas of Bangladesh including Barguna, Narail, Sirajganj, and Bhola, after making landfall along the Chittagong-Barisal coast.
Most places of Bangladesh received heavy rains last night as thousands of people were evacuated to safer places by the administration. Meanwhile, the Cyclone Sitrang has weakened into into a Deep Depression and lay centered at 2.30pm IST over Bangladesh about 90 km northeast of Dhaka, 60 km north-northwest of Agartala. The system is likely to weaken into a depression during the next three hours and further into a well-marked low pressure area.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued Red Warning to four Indian states including Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura that will receive heavy to very heavy rains due to the impact of the Cyclone. Widespread rains accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rain at isolated places is very likely to occur over Tripura on Monday and Tuesday.
