Bhubaneswar: With severe cyclonic storm Yaas over east central Bay of Bengal is likely to reach northwest Bay of Bengal near north Odisha and West Bengal coasts very close to Chandbali-Dhamra port by the early morning of May 26, the Odisha Government has so far evacuated more than 60,000 people to safer places.
This has been informed by Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Jena.
More than 60,000 people have so far been evacuated to cyclone shelters. Over 7,000 cyclone shelters including around 860 permanent shelters have been identified by district administrations for shifting people to safer places, he said.
The district administrations of Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur have accelerated the evacuation process in the low laying areas.
In its latest bulletin, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the severe Cyclonic Storm Yaas is very likely to move north-northwestwards, intensify further into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours. It would continue to move north-northwestwards, intensify further and reach Northwest Bay of Bengal near north Odisha and West Bengal coasts very close to Chandbali-Dhamra port by the early morning of Wednesday, the 26th May. It is very likely to cross north Odisha-West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island around Balasore, during noon of Wednesday.
