Bhubaneswar: Noted Odia linguist Dr Debi Prasanna Pattanayak will be conferred with the first World Odia Language Award. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik will present the award to Dr Debi Prasanna Pattanayak. He will be given a citation and award amount of Rs 20 Lakhs. The award will be given on the occasion of the first World Odia Language Conference in recognition of his life-long contribution towards quality research on Odia language. Dr Pattnayak’s research has greatly enriched Odia language.
Dr Debi Prasanna Pattanayak is a well known and distinguished scholar and linguist of India. He has earned a lot of reputation as the founding director of the Indian Institute of Languages. He was awarded the Padma Shri for his dedicated efforts towards the development of Indian languages. His contribution towards granting classical status to Odia language is noteworthy.
The committee formed by the Government of Odisha comprising G. Uma Maheshwar Rao, President of The Indian Language Council and former Professor of the Department of Languages of Hyderabad University, Prof. Sabita Pradhan, Vice-Chancellor of Odia University, Prof. P. K. Swain, Vice-Chancellor of Utkal University of Culture, and Prof. Basanta Kumar Panda, Project Director of Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Odia of Government of India, had unanimously recommended the name of Dr Debi Prasanna Pattanayak for the award.
