Berhampur: Baidyanathpur Police have arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly attempted to rape a woman.
The accused has been identified as Jeevan Mishra (29), son of Jagannath Mishra, from Santoshpur, PS-Hinjilikatu, currently residing at Co-operative Colony 2nd Line, PS-B.N.Pur.
Based on the written complaint of a 27-year-old woman from Sandhamula village, Ganjam district, the case was initiated by the Baidyanathpur PS.
The victim, a postgraduate in Sanskrit and recently appointed as a contractual Sanskrit teacher at a private school, had developed a friendship with the accused, Jeevan Mishra, over Instagram about a year ago. The two maintained regular contact through phone calls. On July 13, 2025, Mishra offered to assist the victim with shopping in Berhampur as she prepared to move for her new job. Trusting him due to their prior interactions, she agreed. Mishra picked her up from Bhatakumarada on his scooty and took her to Bada Bazaar Market, where they purchased daily essentials. Later, he took her to his aunt’s house in Ashok Nagar, a place they had visited once before on July 11, where he had behaved appropriately. However, during this visit, Mishra left her alone under the pretext of getting medicine. Upon returning, he allegedly attempted to sexually assault her by inappropriately touching and kissing her private parts. The victim managed to resist and demanded to be taken back to her hostel, which he eventually did. The incident left her mentally traumatized and depressed. The victim was taken to Bhatakumarada Medical Centre and later referred to MKCG Medical College for treatment.
Based on prima facie evidence, Mishra was arrested and forwarded to the Court, according to Berhampur SP Dr. Saravana Vivek M.
