First Bhitarkanika Mahotsav to Begin from Feb. 14

Kendrapara: Odisha’s Kendrapara district is all set to welcome a surge of tourists from across the State and outside to the first edition of the Bhitarkanika Mahotsav, which is scheduled to start from February 14.

The festival will showcase the rich biodiversity, flora and fauna of Bhitarkanika National Park, one of the famous Ramsar sites in India.

The three-day festival will be hosted at Nalitapatia village in Dangamala of Rajnagar block with an aim to boost tourism potential of the sanctuary.
Located in the estuarial region of Brahmani-Baitarani, in the north-eastern place of the district, the sanctuary covers an area of 672 square kilometers of mangrove forests and wetland.

Crossed by a thick network of brooks, with the Bay of Bengal on the east, Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is home to over hundreds of species of birds, including winter migratory birds from Europe and central-Asia. It is one of India’s biggest estuarine crocodile habitats and a major coastal eco-system.

The Bhitarkanika group of islands offer great beaches and exciting trails through the dense forests teeming with thrilling boat rides.

Earlier, the district administration had planned to host the festival from February 7, however it has been rescheduled to February 14 due to adverse weather condition, said an official.

The IMD had predicted rainfall in coastal districts including Kendrapara till February 9.
