Kendrapara: The Kendrapara Municipality, which kick started zero waste management recently, has now added another feather to its cap by producing organic manure through waste disposal plant at Hazaribagicha area.
The civic body has started producing organic manure from the biodegradable waste collected from the wards, which can subsequently be used for improving crop productivity.
District Collector Samarth Verma, who initiated the innovative project, said the basic idea is that biodegradable waste from the locality should not go waste in a dump yard. Instead, it can be converted into organic manure to meet the agricultural needs of the farmers. So we have started this project with the help of woman self-help groups (SHGs).
The waste segregated at source by the SHG members in all wards of municipality is sent to the micro composting plant at Hazaribagicha area for producing organic manure.
The price has also been fixed at minimal so that the farmers can get it easily.
The people can purchase the manure at the rate of Rs 5 per kilo gram from the micro composting plant, which is being run by the SHG and guided by swacha saathis.
Organic manures are natural products used by farmers to provide food (plant nutrients) for the crop plants.
The next big step would be branding and marketing of the product. The civic body wants to make available to as many farmers in the district and outside as well.
