Chatrapur: The Ganjam district administration has organised the monthly ‘Mo Gelha Jhia’ programme here today to celebrate the birthday of newborn girls with much fanfare.
Through the programme, a first of its kind in the country, the administration aimed at spreading awareness among the people about the importance of girl child and gender equality.
Aska Lok Sabha MP Pramila Bisoyi and Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange felicitated the newborn girls and their parents with baby kits, sweets and certificates.
Ganjam PD DRDA Siddharth Shankar Swain was also present on the occasion.
Notably, the Ganjam admin launched the programme in January this year under the Biju Kanya Ratna Yojana to improve sex ratio at birth and development of girls in the district.
As part of the part of the programme, the celebration of birth of girls is being held every month with the participation of Gaon Kalyan Samiti, Asha and Anganwadi workers and girl students.
Besides, a bank account is also opened in the name of the newborn under Sukanya Samrudhi Yojana.
