Bhubaneswar: Odisha has emerged as one of the top-performing states in the 2023-24 Performance Grading Index for Districts (PGI-D), according to a report released by the Ministry of Education.
The state has shown remarkable progress in school education, ranking among the top five states alongside Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi, and Gujarat.
Odisha’s outstanding progress is driven by the High School Transformation Programme under the 5T initiative, championed by former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. This transformative effort has reshaped the state’s education landscape by modernizing school infrastructure and seamlessly integrating advanced technology to deliver exceptional, high-quality education.
The PGI-D-D, which assesses school education at the district level, highlighted Odisha’s significant improvement over the past two years, making it one of the biggest movers in the index, alongside Himachal Pradesh, Telangana, Chandigarh, and Goa. Jharsuguda district stood out as Odisha’s top performer, securing the prestigious Uttam-3 grade with a score of 383 out of 600, excelling in learning outcomes, classroom effectiveness, and digital learning.
Odisha scored 595.6 out of 1000 in the state-level PGI, placing it in the Prachesta-3 band, reflecting its strong strides in transforming school education. The state topped the national rankings in the “access” domain, achieving the highest band, ‘Daksh’, with a score range of 941–1000, underscoring its efforts to ensure educational reach across districts.
The PGI-D-D evaluates performance across 74 indicators grouped into six categories: Outcomes, Effective Classroom Transaction, Infrastructure Facilities and Student Entitlements, School Safety and Child Protection, Digital Learning, and Governance Process. These are further divided into 11 domains, including Learning Outcomes and Quality, Access Outcomes, and Digital Learning, among others.
Odisha’s focus on these areas, bolstered by the 5T initiative, has contributed to its robust performance.
