London: Openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul played brilliantly as India registered an easy seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the final World Cup group match at Headingley in Leeds on Saturday.
Rohit has become the first player to hit 5 hundreds in single edition of the World Cup. He created history when he scored his 27th hundred in one-day internationals and fifth in the ongoing World Cup. His century came in 92 balls. He scored 103 off 94 balls in his brilliant knock.
Rohit Sharma, who has been in great form, has now 3 successive centuries in this World Cup. He had scored 102 against England and 104 against Bangladesh. He broke the record of Kumar Sangakkara who had scored 4 hundreds in the 2015 World Cup.
KL Rahul glided Malinga for a single to reach his first World Cup hundred. It is his second ODI century. That’s the seventh century by an Indian opener in this World Cup, an achievement that is almost entirely ludicrous.
Rohit and Rahul produced 189 runs for the opening partnership, which is the highest opening stand put up by an Indian pair in World Cup history. It is the highest opening partnership in World Cup 2019.
Brief scores: Sri Lanka 264/7 in 50 overs (Angelo Mathews 113; Jasprit Bumrah 3-37) lost to India 265/3 in 43.3 overs (KL Rahul 111, Rohit Sharma 103) by seven wickets
