Bhubaneswar: A woman Maoist suspected to be involved in many LWE related incidents surrendered before police in Odisha’s Kandhamal district.
After seeing lot of developmental activities being undertaken by the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik-led Odisha Government, Kanti Mallick alias Amita, a Maoist party member from Gangaranga village of Kutikia GP in Kandhamal district, realized the futility of violent path of Naxalism and thus decided to join the mainstream.
She surrendered before Superintendent of Police, Kandhamal on Sunday.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had given a call to active Naxals and militia for surrendering and becoming part of mainstream and be a part of the developmental initiatives. This appeal of CM coupled with the good surrender and rehabilitation policy of Odisha Government has also influenced her to give up the path of violence and to join the mainstream, according to police.
Establishment of new COBs in interior areas of Kandhamal is obstructing/preventing movement and activities of Naxals.
Increase of regular Anti Naxalite Operation in interior areas of Kandhamal district and subsequent continuous fear of Police action also contributed to her surrender, the police added.
Kanti Mallick got disillusioned with the behavior of senior Maoist leaders (which mostly comprise of Telugu and Chhatishgadi leaders) on regional lines through their partiality towards Andhra Pradesh and Chhatishgarh cadres over other local tribal cadres. Local tribal cadres are consistently being given step-motherly treatment, are being denied promotion in the party and are just being used as foot soldiers, who are asked to stay at the frontline during exchange of fire with police while other cadres escape from the spot under their cover, as had happened in many instances.
She also realized the fact that, Maoist leaders are using innocent tribals of the region for their own individual/vested interests. For that they are making innocent tribals to fight amongst themselves and once their utility is over, they are being branded as police informers and being killed mercilessly.
Besides , she was fed up with the anti-social attitude of the party and with their indiscriminate and unjustified violence against her own people. She was also disgusted with the unnecessary civilian killings by the party, even after protests by local people and also because of upper hand taken by Telugu and Chhattishgadi Cadres and their one upward ship attitude towards Odiya cadres.
She realized that under the current circumstances, there are no grounds for the armed outfit to pursue the revolutionary movement in the light of welfare-oriented policies of the Government.
She has also appealed to the Maoist cadres to give up arms and join the mainstream.
Kanti Mallick will get monetary assistance as per the Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme of Government of Odisha. She will also get financial assistance for building house, pursuing studies and getting training in a trade/vocation of her will, police said.
