Bhubaneswar: Odisha Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) Satyabrata Sahu reviewed the status of fishing boats in the sea in view of the low pressure formed in South East of Bay of Bengal, which may intensify to a depression and a cyclonic storm subsequently.
The SRC urged the field levels officers of the Fisheries Department to ensure that fishermen should not venture into the sea in view of the alert warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
It is being known from the review meeting that as on date, all 23,727 boats plying are safely berthed. Reportedly no fishing boat is in the sea.
Principal Secretary, Fisheries & Animal Resources Development Department and field officials were present in the virtual meeting.
The IMD on Monday said that a low-pressure area has formed over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea. The low-pressure area may form a depression gradually and by May 10 it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of East Central Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea.
Gradually, the cyclonic storm is likely to move north-northwestwards towards the east-central Bay of Bengal till May 11. Thereafter, it is likely to recurve gradually and move north-northeastwards towards the Bangladesh-Myanmar coasts, the IMD added.
