Bhandara: At least 10 newborn babies were killed in a major fire that broke out at a hospital in Maharashtra’s Bhandara.
The tragic incident occurred at the Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of Bhandara District General Hospital in the wee hours of Saturday, according to media reports.
The newborn babies were aged between a month and three months, reports stated citing the hospital.
There were 17 infants in the SNCU of whom seven were rescued.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray ordered an investigation into the cause of the fire.
The Bhandara police are probing the incident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of the infants in the mishap.
“Heart-wrenching tragedy in Bhandara, Maharashtra, where we have lost precious young lives. My thoughts are with all the bereaved families. I hope the injured recover as early as possible”, Modi tweeted.
