Berhampur: The Ganjam district administration has rolled out ‘Mission Zero Sweeping’ in all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) to achieve cleanliness in the district.
Under the mission, no sweeping will occur in the day time. All the residential areas and public places will be cleaned during night, informed the District Urban Development Agency (DUDA), which is implementing the mission.
In the first phase, the mission will cover all the important public places such as market areas, bus stands and commercial establishments from February 8 to 15 and the residential areas will be covered in the second phase from February 15 to 29.
The full-fledged implementation of the mission will start from March 1 ensuring 100 per cent night sweeping in all ULBs covering both residential and commercial areas, said Ganjam Collector and DUDA Chairman Vijay Amruta Kulange.
The Zero Sweeping Mission will incorporate mandatory occurrence of blue & green proper size dustbins as per the usage with adequate capacity in every household and commercial establishments that can store garbage for 24 hours.
The main focus area during the day will be cleaning surroundings of commercial areas and cleaning of drains only.
Sweeping activities of roads and other public places will only be conducted at the night. The sweeping may start by 09:30 PM at Night and the authorities will ensure efficient work being carried out by the sweepers at the time fixed for the respective areas.
The basic objective of Zero Sweeping mission is to make the residents to feel the neatness and cleanliness in the areas when they wake up in the morning.
However, the D2D vehicle shall collect domestic garbage during morning hours as usual to maintain the city environment, he added.
For the proper implementation of the mission, every ward will have a ‘Ward Sanitation Committee’, which will conduct a “Ward Wise Swachata Audit” once in a week.
The committee will comprise Ward Officer, Swacha Supervisor, Swacha Sathi, Anganwadi Worker, Biju Yuva Vahini Volunteers, Senior Citizens, Public Representatives, Banika Sangha Representatives, Temple Committee Representatives and NGO Representatives.
Recently, Ganjam Collector Vijay Amruta Kulange and Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC) Commissioner Chakraborty Singh Rathore made a surprise visit to a market place in Berhampur in the night to take stock of the sanitary measures and slapped hefty fines on six shopkeepers for dumping their store garbage on road.
