Bhubaneswar: The mortal remains of Odisha’s iconic mountaineer Kalpana Das, who died while descending from Mount Everest five days ago, were retrieved in Nepal.
Her mortal remains were brought to the Base Camp-4 of the peak on Tuesday and will be brought back to Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, said Odisha’s Sports and Youth Services Department.
“The search and rescue team of Sherpas was successful in tracing and bringing back the mortal remains of mountaineer Kalpana Dash to Base Camp 4 on Tuesday. Following completion of formalities at base camp Lukla, the body will be flown to Kathmandu on Wednesday,” the department said.
A three-member team has already left for Kathmandu to bring the body back to the state. Earlier, the Secretary of Odisha Sports Department has written a letter to the Indian Embassy in Nepal in this regard, it added.
Das scripted history in May 2008 when she scaled Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak and become a role model in Odisha. She had achieved the feat after two failed attempts in 2004 and 2006.
She was part of a five-member team comprising mountaineers from the United States, Canada and Nepal.
Notably, the Odisha Government on Tuesday paid tribute to the mountaineer by displaying the kit she had used during her first expedition to Mt. Everest in 2008 in the State Museum.
