Bhubaneswar: While Odisha is reeling under severe heat wave conditions, the monsoon is likely to be delayed to reach Odisha this year, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Usually monsoon hit Odisha by June 10 every year. But with its delay in Kerala this time, it is further likely to be delayed to reach Odisha coast, an official said.
According to the IMD prediction, the monsoon is likely to hit the Kerala coast on June 6. Gradually, it will move towards south and central regions of the country.
So far, monsoon current has not reached Kerala and the national forecaster says the monsoon may set in around June 6.
Private forecaster Skymet also made similar prediction and observed that absence of a strong weather system has led to the slowdown.
Given its movement, weather forecasters believe monsoon would reach Odisha about eight to 10 days late. This time, the monsoon rainfall is expected to be normal though.
Meanwhile, a report issued by Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) predicts heat wave condition will prevail in as many as 23 districts of the state for five days (May 31 to June 4).
