Bhubaneswar: As many as 178 persons were arrested on Sunday for drunken driving across Odisha on Sunday under new Motor Vehicles (MV) Act.
A total of 5,474 vehicles were checked at various traffic posts and points on Sunday, out of which 178 drunk drivers were caught during crackdown in one day, informed interim Odisha DGP Satyajit Mohanty.
The arrested persons were forwarded to courts, he added.
The RTO officials collected Rs 1.65 lakh fine from the traffic rule violators in the capital city on day one. The Commissionerate police had conducted checking at 36 locations in the city.
Even though, the Odisha Government has extended the deadline for three months for re-enforcement of MV Act, but action as per the rules will be taken for life-threatening actions like drunken driving, over speeding, driving against the flow of traffic, using mobile while driving, triple riding on a two-wheeler, overloading, jumping red light, not wearing of helmet and seat belt, said Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera earlier.
