Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has congratulated Odisha-born Comptroller & Auditor General (CAG) of India Girish Chandra Murmu for being elected as the external auditor of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Geneva.

Murmu has been elected as External Auditor of Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU), Geneva for three years.
Murmu will assume the position shortly by taking charge from Supreme Audit Institution of Switzerland, an official statement said.
The election was conducted at the virtual meeting of the 284th session of the IPU, which has permanent observer status at the United Nations General Assembly.
Murmu was sworn in as the new Comptroller & Auditor General of India in August this year. He has been the external auditor of various international organizations.
The CAG of India has earlier also been on the UN Board of Auditors from 1993 to 1999 and 2014 to 2020. Presently, he is the external auditor of the World Health Organisation, Geneva and Food and Agriculture Organisation, Rome.
The IPU is an international organization of national parliaments. Its primary purpose is to promote democratic governance, accountability, and cooperation among its members.
As of 2020, the national parliaments of 179 countries are members of the IPU, while 13 regional parliamentary assemblies are associate members. The IPU was established in 1889.
