Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has decided to promote jackfruit cultivation on a massive scale in the State.
Jackfruit has high nutritional value, and the agro-climatic conditions of Odisha are suitable for its production. Odisha is one of the top producers of jackfruit in the country.
In order to promote the jackfruit cultivation in a massive scale, the State Government has started ‘Odisha Panas Mission’ (Odisha Jackfruit Mission) in the 50 blocks of nine districts.
Under the initiative, the State Government aims to make the jackfruit farmers self-reliant.
The State Government is providing all necessary supports to the farmers, including training, technical assistance and cold storage facilities. The SHGs have been involved in the processing and marketing of jackfruit.
Jackfruit trees were mostly confined to forest areas, backyards, waste lands, and road sides with around 3.15 MT of production per annum. Out of the total produce, around 55% is consumed raw as a good vegetable, and around 35% is consumed as a ripe fruit mostly in festivities, as per reports.
