Odisha: Over 12 Lakh Migratory Birds Visit Chilika Lake

Bhubaneswar: More than 12 lakh migratory birds have visited Odisha’s Chilika Lake this winter season.

It has been informed by the Chilika Development Authority after the annual bird census conducted by 21 teams in the brackish water lagoon on Tuesday.

Chilika Lake, which is spread over the districts of Puri, Khurda and Ganjam, has been witnessing arrival of over 10 lakh birds for the successive years.

In the last winter season, 11,05,040 migratory birds congregated at the popular lake.

“Chilika lagoon is the heaven for migratory birds. The census today revealed record presence of more than 12 lakhs of wintering guest in its body. More than 11 lakh plus that was estimated last year. For 2 successive yrs we are having more than a million congregations”, said Chief executive of Chilika Development Authority, Susanta Nanda.

Chilika Lake attracts winged guests from far off places including Caspian Sea, Lake Baikal, remote parts of Russia, Central and South East Asia, Ladakh and Himalayas in every winter for feeding and roosting.
