Bhubaneswar: With the weathermen predicting a cyclonic distubance in the Bay of Bengal by next two to three days, the Odisha Government has started its preparations and ordered all coastal district authorities to make ready men and machinery to fight it. Special Relief Commissioner Pradeep Jena, who had two meetings with various department officials yesterday evening, reviewed the situation again today with the IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra and other senior officials of the state government. With the aim of zero casualty and minimum loss to property, the state government has started preparations. Officials of the ten coastal districts have been instructed to stay ready and organize men and materials to face the challenge.
Cyclone Yash is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal by May 22nd and is likely to hit the Indian coast between Odisha and Bengal by 26th May. A low pressure area is very likely to form over North Andaman Sea and adjoining east-central Bay of Bengal around May 22nd and it is likely to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm in the subsequent 72 hours, according to the IMD.
During his interaction with the officials, SRC Pradeep Jena has directed them to identify the cyclone shelters and other facilities and keep ready staff for any eventualities. Fire Services, ODRAF and NDRF officials have been advised to get prepared as early as possible and keep a robust relief and rescue plan in hand.
