Odisha Receives Remdesivir For Covid-19 treatment

Bhubaneswar: The game changer anti-viral drug Remdesivir, that has the potential to cure COVID-19, has arrived in Odisha and will be used for treatments immediately. Briefing media, additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfair, Pradipta Mohapatra informed. The drug will be used for critical COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment at various Covid hospitals in the state, he added.

Available in 100 mg injectable vials, the medicine needs to be administered intravenously in a hospital, critical care setting, under the supervision of doctors. Odisha is one of the states that have received the medicines in the first phase. The maximum retail price of the medicine is Rs 5,400 per vial. It was approved in the first week of June for emergency usage.

The medicine, a nucleoside analogue prodrug, has inhibitory effects on pathogenic animal and human coronaviruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in vitro, and inhibits Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus, SARS-CoV-1, and SARS-CoV-2 replication in animal models.
