Odisha Says No to Cultivation of Cannabis for Medicinal Use

Bhubaneswar: In a significant development, the Odisha Government said no to cultivation of cannabis as it will continue to remain illegal, informed Excise Secretary Sushil Kumar Lohani after a meeting held at Lok Seva Bhawan here today.

Speaking to media Lohani said several industrial companies had sought permission for ganja cultivation in the State due to its medicinal values, however the Law Department has rejected the proposal.

The meeting held under the chairmanship of the Excise Secretary had a detailed discussion on ganja cultivation.

“Number of industries have proposed the Excise Department to supply the ganja or grant permission for cultivation of cannabis for manufacturing of medicines several times. We had referred it to Law Department for their opinion. Based on present rule and Law Department’s opinion, we however, rejected the proposal,” said Excise Secretary.
