Odisha Weightlifter Bhaktaram Desti Clinches Gold in Commonwealth Championship

Bhubaneswar: Bringing laurels to the State, Odia weightlifter Bhaktaram Desti, who hails from RSC-4 village in Chitrakonda area of Malkangiri district, clinched a gold medal in Commonwealth Championship at South Pacific island nation of Samoa.
The 20-year-old Desti won the metal in 49 kg category with lifting a total of 185 kg in the competition.

Desti, who had been training at the National Camp in Patiala since January 20, has won the Gold medal with new clean & jerk National Record in U-17 boys 49kg class of the 2nd Khelo India Youth Games at Pune on Jan 9, 2019.

Earlier, he won gold in 1st Khelo India School Games in 2018 and gold in Youth National Championship creating a new national record same year.

He was selected to the Sports Hostel in Berhampur in 2014.

He was also selected in the state team to participate in 62nd School National Games at Warangal in Andhra Pradesh in 2016.
