Bhubaneswar: Thanks to the benevolent gesture by the family members of Priyanka Patra from Digapahandi Ganjam, the first ever cadaveric kidney transplant was carried out yesterday at the SCB Medical College in Cuttack. 22 year old Priyanka, who was seriously injured in an accident, and was being treated in a private hospital in Bhubaneswar, was declared brain dead a few days ago. Her family members decided to donate her organs for a nobel cause. A kidney of Priyanka was transplanted to Khirod Sahoo, who was being treated at the SCB for kidney failure.
The process to transplant the kidney was initiated last night as doctors removed the organ and took it to SCB in a special ambulance. It is Odisha’s first ever cadaveric kidney transplant. The operation for kidney transplant began around 5.15 am Tuesday. Five expert doctors of SCB headed by Urology department professor Dr Datteswar Hota performed the operation successfully.
The compassionate act of the family of Priyanka is inspired by another example set by Suraj, a resident of Ganjam, who was declared brain dead last year, and his family members decided to donate his organs. Suraj’s heart, liver, two kidneys and both eyes were transplanted to save six lives. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had praised the act and announced to set up an award in the name of Suraj to encourage Organ Donation in the state.
