Berhampur: Olive Ridley sea turtles arrived in Rushikulya coast in Ganjam district for their annual mass mating and nesting ritual.
Congregation of Olive Ridley sea turtles has started in Ganjam Rushikulya coast and their number is likely to increase further, informed ACF, Berhampur.
Tagging exercise of turtles in Rushikulya coast was resumed on Wednesday by a collaborated approach of Forest and Environment Department represented by Berhampur Forest Division and Zoological Survey of India(ZSI) by tagging 22 (11 female and 11 male olive Ridley) turtles.
The tags are uniquely numbered and have details such as name of organization, email etc. This will help in finding the extent of travel and location of the turtles after congregation, nesting etc.for further research on turtle behaviour. This exercise had been started in Odisha in January 2021 after a span of about 25 years and 1556 turtles had been tagged.
The exercise was conducted by Dr. Anil Mohapatra, Scientist of ZSI and Team.
