Onset of Southwest Monsoon Likely to Be Slightly Delayed: IMD

Bhubaneswar: The onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala is likely to be slightly delayed this year.
As per the India Meteorological Department, the onset of monsoon over Kerala will be delayed by four days and is expected to happen on June 4 this year.

Advance of the southwest monsoon over Indian main land is marked by monsoon onset over Kerala and is an important indicator characterizing the transition from hot and dry season to a rainy season. As the monsoon progresses northward, relief from scorching summer temperatures is experienced over the areas. Southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1. It marks the beginning of the four-month monsoon season, which brings about 75 per cent of India’s annual rainfall.

In 2020, the monsoon onset had happened on June 1. In 2018 and 2022, it happened on May 29, while in 2019 and 2021, the onset happened on June 8 and June 3 respectively, the IMD said.
