Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government has decided to start advanced plasma therapy for the treatment of COVID-19 patients in the State.
A decision in this regard has been taken at a high level meeting chaired by State Health Minister Naba Das at the Lok Seva Bhawan on Thursday.
The Health Minister has directed to set up a technical committee to determine methods of plasma therapy for the treatment of corona patients. The committee will also prepare a detailed guideline about the various aspects of the plasma therapy.
In the first phase plasma banks will be set up at four medical institutes of the State – SCB Medical College, Ashwini Hospital, SUM and KIIMS Hospital.
Plasma therapy involves transfusion of plasma from a convalescent coronavirus patient to a critical patient. The blood of a convalescent patient is rich in antibodies that are expected to help the critical patient recover.

According to the WHO, the experience in the past suggests that the empirical use of convalescent plasma can be a potentially useful treatment for COVID-19.
