Puri: In a bid to make the pilgrim city of Puri crime free, the district police has nabbed a hardcore criminal wanted in several cases after firing.
As per sources, the police arrested dreaded criminal Dibana Behera last night following firing at Ashram Chhak under Kumbharapada police limits.
Acting on tip-off, a joint team of Baselisahi police and Kumbharapada police conducted a raid on the anti-social at around 1.30 am in the night.
Ashish Singh, the DIG, Central Range, who has the reputation of making Ganjam a Crime free district with his ruthless approach, has made a blue print to make the Puri a crime free city. As part of his strategy, the hard core criminal has been nabbed after a brief encounter.
After noticing the police team approaching him Diban who was allegedly planning to execute a ‘contract killing’ opened fire at the cops in a bid to escape.
The criminal sustained a bullet injury on his right leg after cops retaliated with firing exercising their right to defence, sources said.
Baseli Sahi IIC was wounded during the exchange of fire.
The cops seized one 9 mm pistol, one live ball ammunition, one magazine and one Yamaha Fazer bike from his possession.
The injured criminal was taken to Puri District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) and then shifted to SCB Medical in Cuttack for treatment.
As per police sources, Dibana is wanted in around 26 criminal cases pending against him at different police station limits in the district.
