Sambalpur: In view of breeding season of fish, there would be prohibition on fishing in Hirakud reservoir till August 31.
The Fisheries Department has imposed the restriction from June 15 and it would be effective till August 31, said its deputy director Pabitra Behera.
There are around 44 breeds of fish in Hirakud reservoir. A squad has been formed comprising police, fishery cooperative members and fisheries officials to ensure enforcement of ban, Behera said.
The Department is also conducting awareness programmes for the fishermen to make the prohibition effective, he said while adding that the restriction has resulted in significant growth of fish population.
The fishing ban is imposed every year during the breeding season of fish.
