New Delhi: Rajya Sabha on Wednesday passed the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) that gives Indian citizenship to non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
The Bill has been passed in the Upper House with 125 votes in favour and 105 against it.
Home Minister Amit Shah has tabled the Bill earlier in the day.
During the debate on the Bill, Home Minister Amit Shah said the legislation seeks to provide citizenship to persecuted minorities in the three countries and not take away citizenship of anyone.
The opposition parties led by the Congress described the CAB as unconstitutional, discriminatory which discriminates refugees on the basis of religion.
The Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
It will become an Act after President Ram Nath Kovind gives his assent.
