Record 5th Consecutive Term on Card for Charismatic Naveen

Bhubaneswar: While there have been hectic debates and speculations regarding the winners and losers in the 2019 elections following the release of exit poll results by various national media houses soon after the completion of the final phase of polls on Sunday, but in Odisha the outcome of the simultaneous elections is pretty clear.

The ruling Biju Janata Dal in Odisha is all set to retain power for the fifth consecutive term with a landslide victory.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik-led BJD, which had won 117 seats in 2014 assembly elections, is poised to win around 115-120 seats in the 147-member Odisha assembly, according to highly reliable sources and various survey reports based on the moods of the voters after conclusion of four phases elections for 146 seats in the state.

Riding on its immense organizational strength, Naveen’s clean image and the government’s pro-people and development oriented agenda over 19 years in power, the BJD is expected to come up impressive results in constituencies like Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Berhampur, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Sambalpur, Bargarh,  Balasore, Keonjhar, Aska and Kandhamal.

Even though it was a fierce triangular contest in Odisha with the BJD, BJP and Congress in the race, for the most part the main fight was between candidates of the BJD and the BJP.

Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah campaigned extensively across Odisha, along with several top leaders from the party.

Modi visited Odisha 10 times and Shah toured 18 times. Around 50 national BJP leaders criss-crossed the state for election campaigns.  While a wide array of issues related to the state jostled for the electorate’s attention during the campaign, the polls were fought mainly on the Naveen-versus-Modi axis.

The BJP is likely to win six assembly seats while the party will face close contest with its arch rival BJD in 12 assembly seats.

Naveen addressed more than 100 rallies, the highest in any election season. He also contested from two Assembly constituencies for the first time in the 19 years he has been Chief Minister.

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi addressed only five rallies in the state. Significantly, while a triangular contest this time meant that anti-BJD votes got divided between BJP and Congress, thus giving the BJD a clear advantage, a considerably weak campaign by the Congress ensured a direct fight between the BJD and the BJP almost across the state.

It was the towering personality of Naveen Patnaik and his government’s developmental works, Odisha withstood the Modi wave in 2014 and 2019 is not be much different. The Modi factor has some impact on the urban voters but the influence over rural voters is considerably low, said a political analyst.

In 2014 Modi campaigned vigorously for the BJP in Odisha, yet the party could not win more than one seat.

The exit polls, which are being published by national media outlets, have many times proved wrong. In 2009, the exit polls predicted 6 to 7 seats out of 21 for BJD, but the party won 14. Similarly, in 2014 the exit polls gave 12-14 seats, but it won 20 seats. Similarly, this time also all the Exit Polls will be proven wrong, said a BJD leader.
