Bhubaneswar: The renovated Ekamra Haat has now become a fascinating centre for the book lovers with the opening of an open library at the craft village on the occasion of Children’s Day today.
The craft village, situated at the heart of the capital city and has been playing a major role in promoting the Odishan handicraft and handloom, will now attract the book lovers of all ages with rich collection of books.
Inaugurated by R Balakrishnan, Chief Advisor to the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, in the presence of Shubha Sarma, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts, Sisir Kumar Rath, Member Secretary, SIDAC and Sujit Mahapatra, Founder, Bakul Foundation, the open library is based on new concept. It has been designed from an old refrigerator with a glass door. To enhance the reading habits of the public, the exterior has been decorated with interesting paintings and carvings.
The library has about 200 books. Books are available in English and Odia for readers of all classes and ages, not just children. The library is automated. Any reader can choose to read a book on their own, sitting on a grass mat or reading a book. Books will be available as new friends for people coming to Ekamra Hat.
In addition, visitors to Ekamra Hat can also enjoy food at various food stalls. They will have the opportunity to purchase handicrafts and handicrafts from more than 50 stalls at the Haat. Individuals can donate books to the library.
The library has been set up by BAKUL Foundation in partnership with the State Institute for Development of Arts and Crafts under the guidance of the Department of Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts.
Ekamra Hat is open daily from 10 am to 9 pm. The open library will also be open to the public at this time.
