SC Asks Political Parties to Publish Details of Candidates’ Criminal History Online

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today asked all political parties to publish on their respective websites and through print media on the details about criminal background of their candidates contesting elections.

The apex court said that information on cases, offences and trial stages should be published on party websites and local vernacular newspapers, as should the reasons behind candidate selection.

The criminal history of a candidate must also be provided to the Election Commission of India within three days of a candidate’s appointment, said a apex court bench headed by Justice R.F. Nariman.

The Election Commission can initiate contempt of court proceedings if the information is not submitted to its authorities or posted online.

The parties must also clarify on reasons for selecting candidates with pending criminal cases and upload this information on their websites, the bench said.
