SC Rejects Nirbhaya Convict Mukesh Singh’s Petition Challenging Rejection of Mercy Plea

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has rejected Nirbhaya gangrape case convict Mukesh Singh’s petition challenging mercy rejection by the President.

A three-judge bench headed by Justice R Banumathi pronounced the verdict on Wednesday on convict Mukesh Kumar Singh’s plea.

The SC said there is no merit in the contention.

“Alleged torture can’t be a ground, all documents were placed before the President and he had taken them into consideration”, the apex court said.

The counsel of Mukesh Singh has expressed displeasure over the top court’s decision. He said why ‘pick and choose’ method is adopted in this case of his client.

President Ram Nath Kovind had rejected the mercy petition of Mukesh on January 17.

The four death row convicts in the case are scheduled to be hanged on February 1.
