New Delhi: In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India today struck down the Maharashtra Maratha reservation law that granted reservation for the Maratha community in jobs and education exceeding 50 percent threshold.
The SC has said that it violates the equality as enshrined under Article 14 of the Constitution of India and nixed the Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) Act, 2018.
A five judge bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justices Ashok Bhushan, L Nageswara Rao, S Abdul Nazeer, Hemant Gupta, and Ravindra Bhat, pronounced the verdict today. The apex court was hearing petitions filed against the Bombay High Court order that upheld the Maratha quota in 2019.
