Bhubaneswar: On the occasion of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day today, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has urged the people to give the love to the elderly as they truly deserve.
“Elderly people are an essential part of our society and they must be treated with care and respect to make our society flourish”, the Chief Minister tweeted.
“World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, let us commit to prevent elder abuse and pledge to give the love to the elderly as they truly deserve”, Naveen wrote.
According to the UN, around 1 in 6 older people experience some form of abuse. It is predicted to rise as populations age worldwide.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed on June 15 every year with an aim to raise awareness about adults falling prey to elder abuse, neglect and final exploitation.
It was officially recognised by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2011 following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse.
