Around 100 Workers Fall Ill after Ammonia Gas Leak from Prawn Processing Plant in Balasore

Balasore: At least 100 workers fell ill after a toxic gas leaked from a prawn processing plant in Odisha’s Balasore district on Wednesday evening.

The incident took place at around 8 pm when the gas, suspected to be ammonia, leaked from a factory in Panapana at Khantapada area under Soro police limits in the district, according to the reports.

Most of the victims are women workers who were exposed to the toxic gas.

As per reports, the affected people were initially taken to the primary health centre in Khantapada and 40 of them were shifted to Balasore DHH later.

The district administration immediately reached the Khantapada CHC to take stock of the situation, reports added.

The administration is reviewing the situation.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered at Khantapada PS and three factory officials have been detained, informed Odisha DGP BK Sharma.

A special forensic team is being sent from Bhubaneswar to assist investigation, he added.
