Tinsukia: The oil field in Baghjan area in Tinsukia district of Assam has been engulfed in a massive fire today afternoon.
The oil well has been leaking gas uncontrollably since a week after a blowout on May 27.
Soon after the incident at Baghjan Oil Well No 5 at around 1:40 pm, plumes of smoke and flames enveloped the sky in the area.
“While the clearing operations were on at the well site, the well caught fire. There is no casualty reported. Fire tenders are at the site controlling the area,” Oil India Limited, said in a statment.
The OIL said emergency meetings were underway with the experts from Singapore.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal called up Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and apprised him of the incident. He sought the Centre’s help in dousing the inferno.
