Bhubaneswar: Several banks across Odisha today badly hit as the two bank workers unions – All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI) went on one-day nation-wide strike protesting merger of government banks.
Supported by the left parties, the two major bank unions have called for a one-day strike ahead of Diwali to register their protest against the Narendra Modi Government’s decision to merge six PSU banks with four large ones.
According to sources, operations of at least five banks – Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC), Indian Bank, United Bank of India and UCO Bank have been hit.
On August 30, the Central Government announced a mega plan to merge 10 public sector banks into four.
